Great Torrington

The Cavalier Town

Great Torrington, built on the site of an ancient settlement atop the hills with the River Torridge below, the town enjoys spectacular views of the lush commons, connected by a network of walking trails.

The prime position is perhaps why it was considered important during the days of the English Civil War (Battle of Torrington, 1646) There are still Cavaliers in Great Torrington to this day who are alive in the form of a volunteer group. Torrington’s rich history can be further explored at the town’s Museum

The traditional market town has many shops offering quality local produce plus cafes, traditional pubs and other facilities. In the town centre the Plough Arts Centre provides exciting opportunities to experience a vibrant range of arts events. Torrington enjoys a range of attractions nearby, explore the beautiful gardens of RHS Rosemoor or take a factory tour around Dartington Crystal and experience the traditional craft of glass making
