North Devon is renowned for its beautiful coastline and whether you’re enjoying a day of sunshine on the beach, dipping in the surf or trying your hand at coastering, it’s important to keep safe.

If you are planning a trip to the beach and particularly thinking of going into the water choose a lifeguarded beach and swim in the area between the red and yellow flags, which is the area most closely monitored by the RNLI lifeguards.

Whatever the weather make sure you plan ahead for a trouble free trip tote beach and if you do see someone in trouble dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

STAY SAFE AT THE BEACH –a RNLI TOP SAFETY TIPS

• Always swim at a lifeguarded beach
• Swim between the red and yellow flags
• Never swim alone
• Know your beach safety flags
• Never use inflatables in strong winds or rough seas
• If you get into trouble, stick your hand in the air and shout for help
• If you see someone else in trouble, tall a lifeguard. If you can’t see a lifeguard call 999 or 112 and ask for the coastguard
• Find out about the beach you’re going to before you visit
• Check tide times before you go
• Read and obey local hazard signs
